This exhibition will show an exciting cross-section of art done by artists of Haitian decent. In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake, Haiti continues to rebuild, and its people continue to live another day with the hope of a better life. The family and national ties among the Haitian people, both here and elsewhere in the U.S. are strong and resilient. Through artists we can see this strength of character and love of life.

Art and crafts by youth of the Art Creation Foundation For Children in Jacmel, Haiti, will also be on the exhibit. These will include papier mache, paintings, mosaics, and pieces from a special post-earthquake exhibition that links rubble, stories, and paintings.

EFE emi/cs/agp

Art Naples Presents: Miami Wave

Art Naples is proud to present the exhibition “Miami Wave,” curated by Miami artist Sergio Garcia. Miami has since been promoted within Spanish and Latin American culture by means of a steady program of art exhibits, literature, film, theater, music and the humanities. It has evolved in tandem with demographic changes and the ever-growing cultural dynamism of Miami.

“During the these four days, the Art Naples will become a meeting point for participation and exchange. In support of Art Naples mission to highlight the dynamic world of the art and culture from Miami, I have enlisted 12 galleries with 16 artists to exhibit,” notes Mr. Garcia. For the first time in the art fair industry there will be a “live” web cam Art Talk titled, ”Are We on the Same Wave?” This will be a “live broadcast” Naples-to-Miami and back with a meeting of the minds with those tailoring the making of Miami’s 1st Biennale to be scheduled in 2012.

The “Art Talk” moderator in Naples will be led by Miami Biennale’s chief director, Jorge Gutierrez. In Miami at the Biennale’s headquarters, the 25,000 sq.ft Dorissa building in Wynwood, the Art Talk will be led by Miami Biennale’s founder, Milagros Maldonado, and its director, Ariana Testamarck Orellana.

Sergio Garcia presents a wave of work that has been brought about through a dialogue among the arts with a pre- selection of the “Best Of Miami” contemporary art. This show, as the curator says, “is only the tip of the ice-berg.” From painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, objects, and installation, this show will captivate us with its beauty and outstanding quality.

Participating artists: Edouard Duval-Carrie, Angel Vapor, Andres Michelena, Ciro Quintana, Alejandro Mendoza, Phillip Ross Munro, Lillim Cuenca, Onajide Shabaka, Octavio Cuellar, Antonio Alonso, Mariano Costa Peuser, Jose “Tonito” Rodriguez, Luis Delgado, John La Huis, Sergio Garcia, Andres Ferrandi, Maria Font.

Scissors & Glue – The Miami Project

Zuckerfilm Productions is proud to present the trailer for its new documentary film, Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project. The film is an intimate look at a young city with an old soul. This documentary examines the way in which artistic expression and exhibition relates to and also influences community development. Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project dares to ask, ”Which is more powerful, culture’s influence on art or art’s influence on culture?”

Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project follows Helmut Schuster on his journey from gallery owner in Berlin to the founding of his new Gallery Schuster in Miami’s Wynwood district. Drawing inspiration from Miami’s recent art renaissance, this film uses his experiences to illustrate the international draw of the city’s art scene. Scissors and Glue: The Miami Project features discussions with many of Miami’s art community members including: Bonnie Clearwater (MOCA), Rosa De La Cruz, Thea Goldman, David Lombardi, Thomas Collins (MAM), Jason Rubell (The Rubell Family Collection), Terry Riley, Dennis Scholl (The Knight Foundation & World Class Boxing), Silvia Karman Cubiñá (Bass Museum), Katherine Hinds (The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse), Constance Margulies (The Lotus House), Craig Robins, Fred Snitzer, and many more. This documentary addresses the role and responsibility of art in urban society, while highlighting the unique nature of Miami’s people and their relationship to the arts.

Creating Your Artist’s Packet – Series Part 1(a)

In order to approach any of the different types of exhibition spaces or, even a project proposal, you will need to assemble an “Artist’s Packet.”

“What in the world is an ‘Artist’s Packet’ anyway?!”

It’s the way we make first contact with arts professionals: calls-to-artists, galleries, grants, fellowships, proposals and, more. A Packet typically includes: images of the artist’s work, list of past exhibitions, cover letter, reprints of reviews or articles, written artist’s statement, one or two announcements of previous exhibitions and, return mailing envelope.

“Do I really need all that,” you ask?

Yes, you do and, it needs to be prepared like a professional!

“You’ll help me create my Artist’s Packet?”

Yes, we’ll help you create and review all your materials. We’ll show you how to make professional looking images of your work. We’ll help you with the entire process!

(Part 1 also included our previous Meetup on writing your artist’s statement.)

Reality Art(ist) TV

Reality Art(ist) TV

by Onajide Shabaka

RealityTV in Miami

What is the nature of the reality TV show and why would an artist want to be on it? That questioned was asked many times at the initial steps toward a real audition. Is it because they think somebody might laugh that every single said, "Haha, oh, I don’t know, I’m just doing it on a whim." A whim? Standing out in the heat, humidity and burning sun for a chance to be on TV, on a whim? No, there’s much more we’re not being told.

[We are] the production company that did Project Runway and Top Chef. We are casting a new show that will showcase emerging visual artists creating and competing on Bravo. Given the people involved, this project is going to have high impact in the art world. As someone whose content gets in front of a lot of artists, we’re hoping you might find this exciting.

If you’re an emerging or mid-career visual artist with a unique, powerful voice that demands a bigger stage – well. . . Here. It. Is.

We want contemporary artists. Your medium could be one of many (or several of many) – painting, sculpture, installation, video, photography, mixed-media – we want voices that believe in their art and want the world to know.

*To be considered for the cast, attend one of our four regional casting calls around the country, go to www.BravoTV.com/casting to download an application and see what you need to bring with you to an open call.*

Not a single person said, "…for the fame and money." Maybe they know what’s happened to many so called "reality actors" and the fact that those lives have only been improved or enhanced in minor ways at the end of it all. Maybe the artists are trying not to get our hopes up too high by responding in a way that lowers expecations. We all know that visual artists are given rejections as few others in the work force. Oh yes, one person said he was unemployed and doing it on a whim.

Of those that got through to the initial round had to be artists with work the jurors defined as fine art, not craft, not design, not something else. Once you met that criteria, you could then be moved on to the next step. The whole process is a bit of a mystery for most of us and there were very few who could answer questions on the streets. At any rate, most people seemed okay with the process as they went through it. We’ll see what’s next after contacting a few that made it through the initial process.
